Cryo-Mania! Cryotherapy is certainly the new rage in the athlete and celebrity arena. NBA superstars such as Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. are swearing by the icy technique that claims to amp you up before a sporting event (or any event for that matter), soothe painful muscles and speed up recovery by exposing your body to subzero temperatures.
Athletes are not the only ones running for their cryo-fix! Celebrities like Minka Kelly and Derek Hough are clawing at their chance to try this miracle for ‘anti-aging’ while also quickly burning extra calories. With claims that you can burn between 600-800 calories (as your metabolism works so hard to rev itself back to normal temperatures), cryotherapy is the answer to every celebrity’s’ prayer for warding off wrinkles and keeping a slender physique… finally a fountain of youth!
What is CryoBar? Chicago CryoBar is an upscale Cryotherapy service focusing on Whole Body Cryotherapy with the technology of a Whole Body Cryochamber (WBC), that literally freezes the outer layer of your skin with the use of liquid nitrogen. The scientific effect behind the phenomenon is centered around the idea that your body must work extra hard to warm itself up after experiencing a cryo-shock, thus revving metabolism and burning extra calories. Metabolism is not the only thing that responds to the extreme cold temperature. Joints, muscles and even skin elasticity respond to the temperature shock with benefits noticed almost immediately working to prevent aging and inflammation. Customers walk out of a cryo-sesh feeling less pain, aches with noticeably smoother skin and softness.
What To Expect: A typical cryo session lasts about 3 minutes. Customers are asked to undress to their undergarments, removing all jewelry and then covering up with a robe. Socks and gloves are given to protect feet and hands in the chamber. Any clothes worn in the chamber must be fully dry. Once you enter the chamber, you are asked to remove your robe as the platform lifts up. It is recommended to twirl in a circular motion for the duration of the session as the back of the chamber is the coldest part. When the 3 minutes are up, you are given back your robe and are asked to stick out your leg so they can shoot you with a laser thermometer that tells you your current temperature (Mine was 48 degrees!)

Erica: When I heard about CryoBar in Chicago I was eager to try the fad that has everyone in the health and fitness world talking. However, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t scared to submerge my body in subzero temperatures for 3 minutes, which seemed like a potential 180 seconds from hell. My fears were put at ease after speaking with many satisfied believers that claimed the experience was totally do-able and worth it!
To prepare for my session, I wore warm clothes to warm my body in advance in hopes to make my experience more comfortable. As the minutes continued, I felt my legs prickly, but never felt that I needed to cut the session short. The 3 minutes went by faster than I expected and once I was done I felt an immediate boost of energy with noticeably less soreness all over my body.
Lindsey: I have seen pictures of my friends in Miami and LA trying out this phenomenon called Cryotherapy. Alas, CryoBar opens up in Chicago and I had to immediately try it out! I had no idea what to expect, but the front desk ladies were extremely welcoming and helpful and explained the entire process from start to finish as well as all of the health benefits… one of the owners lost 16 lbs using Cryo!
I was a bit nervous (not nervous enough not to try losing 800 calories in 3 minutes because well, I’m not crazy) but because I HATE being cold. I literally sleep with a heated blanket every night regardless of season, but I toughened up and stepped into the chamber, removed my robe, and hoped for the best. To my surprise the 3 minutes sped by. It was definitely cold, but not unbearable.
I stepped out feeling rejuvenated and even a bit giddy! I would start my morning this way everyday if I could! I highly recommend you try this place out.
